Refurbishment of Raeden Court

Raeden Court Care Home is situated on the west side of Aberdeen and about two miles from the city centre. It forms one of Blackwood Homes and Care three care homes. It is a modern housing complex designed to provide accommodation for disabled people within an integrated community setting.

Having recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, a comprehensive refurbishment was undertaken to create a fresh, modern aesthetic while ensuring an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Our commitment is to provide a home where all residents, regardless of ability, feel safe, comfortable, and empowered to live as independently as possible.

Bedrooms

Residents’ bedrooms have been refreshed with new flooring, full redecoration, and brand-new wardrobes and desks. The en-suite shower rooms have been completely transformed with contemporary wet wall panels, non-slip safety flooring, modern LED lighting, energy-efficient heating, and specialist appliances and aids designed to support people with varying support needs.

A key aspect of life at Raeden Court is a strong sense of community, where social connections between residents, families, visitors, and staff are actively encouraged.

Communal Areas

Central to this is the availability of high-quality, accessible communal areas. The entrance and hallways have been fully redecorated and fitted with new, brighter LED lighting, creating a fresh and inviting first impression. New timber handrails throughout the hallways improve accessibility and promote greater independence. The reception area has also been enhanced with large, comfortable armchairs, providing a welcoming space where people can gather, socialise, or simply relax.

Lounge

The residents’ lounge and kitchen have been refurbished to create a more private, homely space for residents to enjoy. The lounge now features a small kitchen area, a dining space, and a comfortable seating area, all complemented by high-quality vinyl flooring, a contemporary colour scheme, modern timber wall panelling, and new furniture.

A focal point of the project was the transformation of the main communal area—the dining room.

This space is not only used for daily meals but also for social activities, making inclusivity and accessibility paramount. The dining room now centres around a long communal dining table, encouraging residents to dine together and build connections with one another and the staff. The space is further enhanced with modern pendant lighting and a feature dropped ceiling. To ensure flexibility, the dining table has been designed to split into three sections and is extendable, accommodating different dining arrangements and social events.

Kitchen

An innovative addition to the dining room is the new kitchen area and breakfast bar, specifically designed with accessibility in mind.

The rise-and-fall worktop can be electronically adjusted to suit each resident’s needs, ensuring that everyone, regardless of mobility, can participate in meal preparation or simply enjoy the space. The split-level breakfast bar caters to both standing and seated users, fostering an informal, inclusive dining experience.

Dining Room

The design of the dining room was carefully considered to create a stylish yet practical space. Discreet storage solutions blend seamlessly with the overall aesthetic, while fluted timber wall panelling and ceramic tiling add texture. The timber-effect flooring introduces warm, natural tones, and a combination of dark blue and light grey accent walls highlight key features. Thoughtful lighting design includes feature pendant lights above the dining areas, efficient LED spotlights for background illumination, and customisable coloured LED strip lighting above the communal dining table and kitchen. These elements allow residents to personalise their space, adjusting the lighting to suit different times of day or special events.

Staff Areas

Staff areas have also been refurbished with new flooring, décor, lockers, and furniture, ensuring a comfortable, modern environment that supports staff wellbeing. Creating an enjoyable workspace enhances the overall atmosphere of Raeden Court, benefiting both residents and employees alike.

The refurbishment was designed by Blackwood’s in-house Asset Officer, with full engagement from residents, families, and staff throughout the process. Consultation events provided opportunities for residents to contribute their thoughts on the design, ask questions, and vote on colour schemes and finishes. Every resident was able to choose the colours and finishes for their own bedroom and en-suite, ensuring a truly personalised touch. Even post-completion, residents continue to be involved in shaping their surroundings, selecting pictures and decorations for communal spaces.
